“When the orchestra were at their best, they were quite simply breath-taking. Delius’ “On hearing the first Cuckoo in Spring” which began the evening was arresting … , and OSJ quickly revealed their speciality party-trick of strong, warm, rich colour from the strings counterbalanced by light, floating burbles from the oboes. The ensemble’s rendition of Honegger’s 20th-century symphonic poem “Pastorale d’été” exhibited their finest quality: the superb, quasi-telepathic concord which can only exist in a group which has been playing together for the best part of two generations. Later, Glasunov’s “Winter” was difficult to fault, the ponderous intensity of its opening broken by appropriately witchy and wonderful gambolling-gnome passages.”

Cushion Concert, The Ashmolean Museum

What a fine musician Mark Simpson is! His clarinet playing at the OSJ Ashmolean concert in July was brilliant. We marvelled at his dexterity playing the Stravinsky pieces and the sensitivity of the Brahms Quintet with the OSJ players. The Ashmolean provided an wonderfully intimate space to hear such beautiful music. More like this please!

All I can say is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!!!!!!! What a musical evening to remember and to salivate over in years to come. Three standing ovations. I bet QEH doesn’t see those too often. And all of it the result of your vision and courage in putting it together. The Moultrie Clan are eternally grateful and send you their thanks and congratulations.

“Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is perennially popular. OSJ leader Jan Schmolk was the soloist in another spacious performance, this time with OSJ artistic director John Lubbock conducting. Schmolk is one of those rare players who can articulate every detail without ever losing the flow or mood of the music. This was a lyrical and tender performance, enhanced by a meeting of musical minds between soloist, conductor, and orchestra.”

What was the beautiful and intriguing encore played by Mahan Esfahani at the Ashmolean concert on 12 October? A lovely evening and that piece is still haunting me.

When clicking on the forthcoming events button, nothing seems to display itself – is it that your 2012 season is yet to be announced or am I doing something wrong?! I am a new member!
